Breast aesthetics can be summarized as moving the form of the breast from its current state to a more pleasing point. The problem to be intervened can occur in a wide range of problems such as smallness, sagging, size, developmental deformities and even a buried nipple. Breast augmentation surgeries are among the most common surgeries in breast aesthetics.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is the enlargement of the existing breast volume by placing a prosthesis under the breast tissue. During the breast augmentation procedure, the breast tissue should be recovered simultaneously against sagging and laxity, if any.

In Which Situations Is Breast Augmentation Surgery Performed?

Breast augmentation surgery is most commonly performed to increase breast size in women who are not satisfied with their breast size. Apart from this, breast augmentation surgery can be performed for different reasons.

  • Breast augmentation surgery can be performed to support the recovery of breasts that sag and lose volume after breastfeeding or serious weight loss.
  • Breast augmentation surgery can be performed to provide breast volume to women whose breast structure does not develop due to chest wall anomaly.
  • In addition to these situations, breast augmentation surgeries can be performed with prosthesis to create breasts during the gender change process.

How is breast size decided?

Breast size is a situation that should be decided jointly by exchanging ideas between the patient and the doctor.

There are issues that should be considered in the first stage when deciding on breast size.

  • Chest wall features
  • Breast base dimensions
  • Location of the breast on the chest wall
  • Thickness of breast tissue
  • Factors that may restrict choices, such as asymmetry between the breasts, are revealed by making measurements.

There are hundreds of prostheses with different sizes. The patient’s motivation for surgery is the most important factor in the decision mechanism and the shape and size of the prosthesis to be selected.

How much change the patient wants and how noticeable the change will be should be discussed in detail. Some patients may want a change that only their partners will notice, while others may want a change that will be noticeable in their social life. The important point here is to determine realistic and aesthetically appropriate limits and to provide the change the patient wants within these limits.

How is Breast Augmentation Surgery Performed?

Breast augmentation surgery simply consists of 4 stages.

  • The first stage of breast augmentation surgery is to choose the incision where the breast prosthesis will be placed.
  • Using the determined incision, a surgical pocket is created where the breast prosthesis will be placed.
  • The prosthesis that will be most suitable for the prepared pocket should be selected with false prostheses (sizer, measurer) similar to the prosthesis we have.
  • In the last stage of breast augmentation surgery, the breast implant is surgically placed into the prepared pocket.

Before the surgery, instead of a single size, prostheses in a certain range are determined and the best looking prosthesis is selected aesthetically by placing false prostheses that are copies of those prostheses into the created pocket. In the last stage, the real prosthesis of the same size is placed.

How Many Hours Does Breast Augmentation Surgery Take?

A routine breast augmentation surgery takes approximately 1.5-2 hours.
