Who Can Have Gastric Bypass Surgery?

It can be performed on individuals with a body mass index of 40 and above who do not benefit from sleeve gastrectomy surgery, who have undergone sleeve gastrectomy surgery but have regained weight, who are severely obese and have metabolic syndrome…

What are the Types of Gastric Bypass?

There are 3 different methods of gastric bypass operation in Turkey. These gastric bypass types are:

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass: This surgery is widely performed in the world. It is one of the most preferred gastric bypass surgeries. In this method, where most of the absorption functions of the small intestine are preserved, digestive problems are very few. People treated with the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass method experience a feeling of satiety in a short time while consuming the foods in their meals.

Mini Gastric Bypass: With this surgery, the proximal part of the stomach is turned into a tube and consists of anastamosis with the small intestine at a certain cm. It is used in obesity and type 2 diabetes surgery.

Duodenal Switch : In this surgery, the stomach is turned into a tube and the bile duct is changed and anastamosis is made between the stomach and small intestines. In addition to the surgeries mentioned above, bypass surgeries such as ileal interposition, single anastamosis gastric bypass and transit bipartition are also used in the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

How is Gastric Bypass Surgery Performed in Turkey?

Gastric bypass surgery in Turkey is performed in two stages. In the first stage, the main goal is to reduce the volume of the stomach. In the first stage, the upper part of the stomach is reduced and this area is separated for digestion. In the second stage, the bypass procedure, which also gives the surgery its name, is performed. In this step, the volume of the small intestine is shortened and less nutrients are absorbed. During eating, most of the stomach and a large part of the gastrointestinal tract are not used, which reduces both the amount of food consumed and the percentage of nutrients absorbed. In addition, the neuroendocrine system of the intestines is altered (surgical treatment of TYPE 2 diabetes).

What are the Pros of Gastric Bypass Surgery?

  • More than 90 percent of patients with hyperlipidemia recover.
  • Within twelve months after surgery, patients lose more than seventy percent of their excess weight.
  • Many diseases such as hypertension, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes completely disappear in 70 percent of individuals.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux patients have a high reflux recovery rate.
  • This situation is eliminated in individuals who have self-confidence problems due to overweight problems.
  • Thus, the incidence of diseases such as depression also decreases.
In type 2 diabetes patients with metabolic syndrome, the recovery rate with these surgeries is over 90% on average.
